In celebrating International Women’s Day, we are presented with a valuable opportunity to not only celebrate the strides made in the journey towards gender equality but also to acknowledge the ongoing work needed to build a more inclusive and equitable future for all. As I reflect on the pivotal moments of my own career journey, I want to share what I feel are 4 foundations that have made the most impact in my career.
Learning Your Intention: While my career path may not have always been crystal clear, I found that grounding myself in the intention to continually grow and make a positive impact guided me towards roles that aligned with this purpose. Understanding what truly motivates you, identifying the goals you strive to accomplish and taking the steps required to reach them are pivotal in transforming aspirations into achievements. The earlier you gain clarity on what drives you, the sooner you can translate your ambitions into tangible outcomes.
Embracing Authenticity: In a world full of diverse perspectives and advice, authenticity is a guiding principle that has shaped my professional journey. By staying true to yourself, you cultivate trust and credibility, both within your professional circles and with yourself. Authenticity allows you to navigate feedback and advice with discernment, recognizing which counsel aligns with your values, aspirations and unique strengths. This authenticity serves as a compass, guiding you towards opportunities and decisions that align with your authentic self, fostering personal fulfillment and success in your career.
Cultivating Meaningful Connections: The influence of mentors and supporters has been instrumental in my growth and development. From female mentors who exemplified the delicate balance between assertiveness and collaboration to male allies who actively championed diversity and inclusion, these relationships provided invaluable guidance and encouragement. Don’t wait for a mentorship program, seek out guidance from those who you can gain valuable wisdom from and invest in relationships with those who uplift and inspire you.
Championing Female Empowerment: Supporting other women has been a cornerstone of my career journey, profoundly shaping my professional and personal growth. Through firsthand experience, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of solidarity among women and the detrimental consequences of its absence.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow women professionals, I have seen how of creating a culture of respect and inclusivity, celebrating their achievements and creating pathways for their advancement can foster positive change.
